On April 28, 20 fifth-graders from Seymour Elementary School will spend a day on the Syracuse University campus under the watchful eye of SU students. Shadow Day 2008, sponsored by University College, partners young students with members of the Latino Undergraduates Creating History in America
(La LUCHA), an organization for Latino SU students, and members of the SU chapter of the
Golden Key International Honour Society.
The day begins with a breakfast at the residence of SU Chancellor and President Nancy Cantor, where the students will meet with representatives from the University and the Syracuse City School District, and receive an introduction to campus life. The students will then pair off with a sponsoring college student, attend a class, have lunch, and find out about requirements and opportunities for attending a higher education institution like SU. The day culminates with a visit to the Carrier Dome, where they will meet Otto the Orange and some SU student-athletes.
Seymour students must maintain good behavior and academic records in order to be eligible to participate. The event is meant to inspire students to strive to do their best and set goals to attend college themselves. Each student will receive a 2008 Shadow Day t-shirt, as well as a gift bag of school supplies donated by the SU Bookstore.
