Do you have what it takes to make the cut? If you have a ponytail of healthy hair at least 10 inches long, and you're willing to part with it, you do.

On Tuesday, April 29, Syracuse University invites students, faculty, staff and community members to the Hildegarde and J. Myer Schine Student Center to Make the Cut, an event to benefit Locks of Love, a public, non-profit organization that makes hairpieces for financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss. From noon-4 p.m., donations will be collected in the Schine Center's atrium. In return for their gift, donors will receive a free haircut and style from local professional hairstylists.

"I'm thrilled to be a part of this event, and hope that we can collect many, many donations," says Carol Kim, assistant director of communications for SU's Division of Student Affairs. "This is an easy, fun way to help children who need something we often take for granted. It takes several ponytails to make a hairpiece for one child, so I encourage our community to make the cut so we can help as many kids as possible."

Locks of Love helps restore a sense of self, confidence and normalcy for children facing illnesses or medical treatments that result in hair loss. The children receive the hair prostheses free of charge, or on a sliding scale, based on their financial need. Started in 1997, the organization has helped more than 2,000 children look and feel better with the help of donors across the country.

Those who do not have hair long enough to donate can make financial donations directly to Locks of Love, or donate items like brushes, combs or hair accessories, which will be given to the children as well. Hair donors should come to the event with clean and dry hair. Hair that is colored or permed is acceptable; hair that has been bleached is not. All colors, textures and types are needed. This event is sponsored by the SU's Division of Student Affairs, Industry, Joseph's at the Carriage House, On the Mark Salon, Vie De Bella Salon, and Visions Hair Salon.

Make the Cut will take place on the first day of Ten Tons of Love, SU's record-setting donation drive that helps the needy of Central New York. For more information on Make the Cut, contact Kim at 443-8568
