The Institute for Retired Professionals (IRP) will host a presentation by Robert Hood, retired real estate developer from Cazenovia and goodwill ambassador in Haiti, Thursday, April 3. The IRP meets at the First Baptist Church of Syracuse, 5833 E. Seneca Turnpike, Jamesville, with its twice-monthly programs running from noon to 1 p.m. Refreshments are served, and interested citizens are encouraged to attend.
Hood will discuss his experiences in Haiti, where he has been volunteering for more than five years. Hood was instrumental in bringing clean water to the village of Thibeau, as well as strengthening its economy. He also spearheaded the building of a community center, which was named for his daughter, Kara Hood, who spent nine months in South Africa doing social work. She died in a car accident on a return trip to South Africa in 2001.
The IRP, established by University College of Syracuse University, provides opportunities for retired people to stay intellectually active, to expand interests and to make new acquaintances. Subjects for programs have included public and community events, political and social issues, fine arts, science and the environment.
