The Syracuse University School of Education will hold an open house to launch a new scholarship program that offers graduate students in eligible programs funding covering 33 percent of the cost of tuition. The program, called the School of Education-Syracuse University Graduate Student Tuition Scholarship Program, is open to current SU students -- both undergraduate and graduate -- and alumni who have graduated within the last five years. The program is designed to financially assist students who wish to enroll full-time in a School of Education master's degree program leading to New York State certification. The open house is scheduled for Friday, April 18, from 4-6 p.m. in the Huntington Hall atrium. Refreshments will be provided.

"We hope the open house will make students in the School of Education and all the University's schools and colleges aware of this tremendous opportunity," says Amie Redmond, assistant dean for academic and student services. "Each of the participating programs will host an information table, and my office will provide graduate recruitment material, graduate course catalogs and detailed information about the scholarship program." Admissions advisors, School of Education faculty members and current graduate students will be on hand to explain how to apply for the scholarship and answer questions about the included programs.

The goal of the scholarship is to attract outstanding and highly motivated students to careers in education, particularly in such high-needs areas as science, mathematics, special education, literacy and school counseling. School of Education preparation/professional master's programs covered by the scholarship program include the following:

  • Art Education (preparation and professional certification programs)
  • Childhood Education
  • Early Childhood Special Education
  • English Education
  • Inclusive Special Education (1-6 and 7-12)
  • Inclusive Special Education (severe/multiple disabilities)
  • Literacy Education (birth-6 and 5-12)
  • Mathematics Education
  • Music Education (preparation and professional certification programs)
  • School Counseling
  • Science Education (Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics)
  • Social Studies Education

Program Eligibility

The Graduate Student Tuition Scholarship Program covers 33 percent of the tuition charges students are responsible for paying each semester as a full-time student (full-time study is defined as registered for nine credits for spring and fall, or six credits during a given summer session.) The tuition scholarship program applies toward master's programs only.

To maintain eligibility, students must formally be admitted and matriculated into one of the specified master's programs and demonstrate satisfactory academic progress toward that degree, which includes attaining and maintaining a 3.0 cumulative grade point average by the end of the second semester.

While the scholarship may be combined with most other forms of financial aid, the scholarship is applied to the remainder of the tuition owed after all other funding is awarded. There will be no cash refunds or payouts.
