Stith named to Academy of Distinguished Alumni at Norfolk State University

Melvin T. Stith, dean of the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University, has been named to the inaugural class of the Academy of Distinguished Alumni at Norfolk State University. Stith is one of only four Norfolk State alumni making up the inaugural class. The induction will take place at the university's President's Gala, to be held March 29 in Norfolk, Va.


Outstanding alumni are inducted into the Norfolk State University Academy of Distinguished Alumni in recognition of exemplary accomplishments in their professional lives and their service to the community, state or nation.


Stith holds an M.B.A. and a Ph.D in marketing from the Whitman School at SU and earned a bachelor's degree at Norfolk State in 1968. He is the 16th dean of the Whitman School and was previously the dean and the Jim Moran Professor of Business Administration in the College of Business at Florida State University.


A native of Jarratt, Va., Stith is a Vietnam War veteran who served in the U.S. Army Military Intelligence Command from 1968-71 and achieved the rank of captain during his military tenure.


He is married to Patricia Lynch Stith, a 1968 Norfolk State University alumna, who is currently the assistant provost for equity and inclusion and associate dean of the Graduate School at SU. They are the proud parents of three children, Melvin Jr., Lori and William Stith.
