Michael Barkun, professor of political science at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University, will present a talk, "Tracking the Literature of the Political Fringe," on Thursday, March 20, at 4 p.m. in the Peter Graham Scholarly Commons, located on the first floor of E.S. Bird Library.
Barkun has published widely on conspiracy theories and their influence on the political system. In his talk, he will discuss his attempts to gather information about fringe political groups in the 1980s, a time before the Internet and a time when most research libraries did not collect political printed matter such as programs, posters and guidebooks.
Among the 10 books Barkun has written are "A Culture of Conspiracy: Apocalyptic Visions in Contemporary American Society" (University of California Press, 2006) and "Religion and the Racist Right" (The University of North Carolina Press, 1996). Copies will be available for sale at the talk.
