Pianist Ann Schein will perform in the next concert of the Esther Drake and John Vincent Malmgren Series at Syracuse University on Sunday, Feb. 17.
The concert will begin at 4 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Free parking is available in the Irving Garage and the University's west lots.
Schein will perform works by Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel during the program. In addition to the concert, Schein will offer two piano master classes in the College of Visual and Performing Arts that are free and open to the public. The classes will be held Friday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 16, at 10 a.m. in the Rose and Jules R. Setnor Auditorium in Crouse College. Free parking for Friday is available in the Irving Garage and the University's west lots. Free parking for Saturday is available in the Waverly lot.
Schein has performed in major American and European cities and in capitals of more than 50 countries around the world. In 1980, she extended the legacy of her legendary teachers, Mieczyslaw Munz, Arthur Rubenstein and Dame Myra Hess, presenting the major Chopin repertoire in six concerts in Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall, the first Chopin cycle to be heard in New York in 35 years.
Her recordings include solo piano works of Schumann and early songs of Alban Berg, in collaboration with Jessye Norman. From 1980-2000, she was on the piano faculty of the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. She has been an artist-faculty member of the Aspen Music Festival and School since 1984.
The concert is part of the Malmgren Concert Series at Hendricks Chapel. The series was made possible by a generous gift to Hendricks Chapel from alumna Esther Malmgren '42 in 1991. The free Sunday afternoon concerts, held throughout the year, feature a wide variety of music.
Vocal ensemble Seraphic Fire will perform on April 6 in the last scheduled Malmgren Concert of the 2007-08 season. The performance is co-sponsored by Pulse.
