For the 2008 Jurist in Residence Lecture, the Syracuse University College of Law will host the Hon. Paul R. Michel, chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. His lecture, "Reporting to the Taxpayers and Consumers of Adjudication in the Internet Age," will be held Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 4 p.m. in Room 200 of MacNaughton Hall. Public parking is available in the Irving Garage.
Michel was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in March 1988. In 2004, he assumed the duties of chief judge. Michel has written more than 300 opinions in patent, trademark, takings, contract, tax, international trade, veterans' rights and government personnel cases. He is the recipient of the Eli Whitney Prize, the Katz-Kiley Prize and the Jefferson Medal for "outstanding contribution - to the progress of science and useful arts."
Since 2003, he has been named by Managing Intellectual Property magazine as one of the 50 Most Influential People in the world in intellectual property. In March 2007, Michel was awarded the New York Intellectual Property Law Association's Fifth Annual Outstanding Public Service Award.
Michel has served in the executive and legislative branches of the government for 22 years. He is a graduate of Williams College and the University of Virginia Law School.
