On Jan. 17-19, four members of Syracuse University's Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) traveled to Boston to participate in a regional financial case study competition and returned to Syracuse with the first-place award. The "Duel" competition was hosted by Boston College, and the SU team competed against the University of Massachusetts, Saint Anselm College, Worcester State College, Franklin Pierce University and the University of Southern Maine.
As part of the University of Arizona's national competition, SU-SIFE's win qualifies the team for the national competition, "Duel in the Desert," March 6-9. The eight winning regional teams will face off at "Duel in the Desert" for $19,000 in prize money. Members of the SU team are senior April Hace, sophomore Dan Kinney, senior Lauren Echavarria and sophomore Michelle Eifu.
"We are so thrilled that our students took first place in the competition and returned with a major trophy," says Amanda Nicholson, assistant professor of retail management. "This is a distinguished accomplishment, and I am confident that the students will succeed at the national competition in March."
Founded in 1975, SIFE is a global nonprofit organization that helps students develop communications skills through learning, practicing and teaching the principles of free enterprise on their campuses, in their communities and beyond. SIFE also emphasizes teamwork, leadership and community outreach. With more than 1,600 participating colleges and universities in 40 countries and territories, SIFE is one of the largest university-based organizations in the world.
