Architect Brad Lynch, founder and principal of Brininstool + Lynch, located in Chicago, will speak at the opening of his exhibition, "Claremont House," at the Syracuse University School of Architecture on Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 6 p.m. in the Architecture Gallery at The Warehouse, 350 W. Fayette St. This single project exhibition of Lynch's own house is indicative of the firm's reductive logic and modern approach to materials and detailing, while clearly representing an individualistic aesthetic. Lynch will lead a visiting critic studio at Syracuse Architecture during the spring 2008 semester. Students participating in the studio, sponsored by UPSTATE: A Center for Design, Research and Real Estate at the school and co-taught by UPSTATE fellow Mathew Aitchison, will develop ideas for the Case Supply Warehouse in Syracuse, a site that is part of the Near Westside Initiative, a community coalition in which SU is a partner working to create an Arts, Technology and Design Quarter. The students' work will include concepts for artists' lofts and work spaces, a cafe, a green technology research lab and exhibition and performing arts space.
Major projects of Brininstool + Lynch include Gallery 24 at the Art Institute of Chicago; the Racine Art Museum in Racine, Wis.; 1845 S. Michigan Avenue, a 20-story residential project in the fast-developing South Michigan Corridor; and the Perimeter Gallery in New York City.
The firm has received 16 Design Excellence Awards from the American Institute
of Architects-Chicago, an American Architecture Award, and was honored as Emerging Voice in Architecture by the Architectural League of New York in 2003. In July 2006, Brininstool + Lynch was named a finalist in the Global Green USA Sustainable Design Competition for New Orleans. The work of the firm has been featured regularly in international publications, and two monographs have been published on the firm. Lynch is the design principal for the firm's cultural and institutional projects, special projects, as well as custom residential projects.
