Lund University, Sweden's largest university for teaching and research, will confer on Chandra Talpade Mohanty the degree of honorary doctor of philosophy in social sciences on May 30, 2008. Mohanty, professor of women's studies and Dean's Professor of the Humanities in The College of Arts and Sciences at Syracuse University, was nominated for the highest honor that Lund University bestows by its Centre for Gender Studies, which uses her work in its courses and research.
Mohanty, a native of India and current resident of Ithaca, N.Y., is also the recipient of a 2005-06 Fulbright Senior Specialist Award. Mohanty is a member of the advisory board for Peer Review, the journal sponsored by the Association of American Colleges and Universities. She is also a member of the national advisory boards of Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society; Transformations: The Journal of Inclusive Pedagogy and Scholarship; Feminist Africa (South Africa); Asian Women (Korea); and the Caribbean Review of Gender Studies. Mohanty is editor of the Comparative Feminist Studies Series for Palgrave/Macmillan.
Mohanty has written and edited a number of books, series, and essays, including "Feminism without Borders: Decolonizing Theory, Practicing Solidarity," (Duke University Press, 2003,) "Feminist Genealogies, Colonial Legacies, Democratic Futures" (Routledge, 1997), co-edited with M. Jacqui Alexander; and "Third World Women and the Politics of Feminism" (Indiana University Press, 1991), co-edited with Lourdes Torres and Ann Russo. Her current projects include a book with Minnie Bruce Pratt, "At Home in the Struggle;" a co-edited anthology, "Feminism and War," with Pratt and Robin Riley; and the "Sage Handbook of Identities," co-edited with Margaret Wetherell.
Mohanty holds a Ph.D. in education and a master's degree in the teaching of English from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and master's and bachelor's degrees in English from the University of Delhi in India.
