SU Abroad has introduced several new incentives that will benefit those considering international study this summer and fall. The new incentives are part of an ongoing effort to promote greater access to study abroad opportunities, as well as to encourage participation in programs that highlight diversity.

Summer 2008

There are two new significant incentives for summer 2008: an increase in need-based aid for all summer programs -- up 40 percent from last year to a new $1,400 maximum -- and significant program-specific incentives for select diversity and culture studies programs.

"These financial incentives are unprecedented," says Nell Bartkowiak, associate director for summer programs at SU Abroad. "Then add the fact that we're offering unique academic programs and internship opportunities that students can't get during the semester. This combination makes summer 2008 an especially attractive time to explore our programs."

The select diversity and culture studies incentives include:

• "Arctic Journey": Explore the Inuit of Nunavut (Arctic Canada) with this fascinating blend of field study and community service. $4,000 automatic grant (regardless of need).
  

  
  

• "Entrepreneurship & Empowerment in South Africa": Help and learn from disadvantaged entrepreneurs in the black townships near Cape
  
  
  Town. $1,000-$4,000 need-based grants.
  

  
  

• "Muslim Cultures": Learn about Muslim cultures in multi-cultural London via guest lectures, community partnerships and field trips to Granada and Istanbul. $2,000 automatic grant (regardless of need) and three credits covered by Chancellor's Scholarship and $1,400 reduction in program fees.
  

  
  

• "Paris Noir": Study the influence and dynamics of black culture and literature through panel discussions, poetry readings and visits to studios, markets, theater workshops and more. $1,000-$4,000 need-based grants.
  

The deadline to apply for summer 2008 programs is March 1.

Fall 2008

SU will once again offer a $1,000 discount for Spring 2009 on-campus housing for those who study abroad for the Fall 2008 semester. In addition, 100 $1,500 need-based grants are available, and up to 10 percent more above current financial aid. The deadline to apply for the $1,000 housing discount is March 7.
