Imagining America: Artists and Scholars in Public Life (IA), a national consortium of colleges and universities based at Syracuse University committed to public scholarship in the arts, humanities and design, invites SU faculty to submit grant proposals by Feb. 15, 2008, for courses to be taught in spring 2009.
IA is committed to nurturing opportunities for Scholarship in Action on the SU campus. The purpose of the Imagining America grant is to pilot new courses highlighting public scholarship and practice that link the community and campus, and also demonstrate the likelihood of becoming sustainable; incorporate the arts, humanities or design; and serve a democratic purpose. Examples include encouraging significant community participation around a relevant issue, helping solve a shared problem, and contributing to the revitalization of Syracuse.
Faculty members may apply for $1,000-$10,000 grants, which may provide funds for faculty or community members to teach or facilitate components of the course; a student assistant to help administer or plan the course; modest honoraria for planning or guest lecturers; time to coordinate course release; and materials, and/or transportation.
Each application must include a project statement, a description of in-class and out-of-class learning, a department chair- and dean-written letter of support, and a budget. Submissions will be reviewed by a selection committee and recipients will be announced April 15, 2008. Members of the selection committee are Louise Phelps, professor in the Writing Program in The College of Arts and Sciences, and author of a white paper on Scholarship in Action; Lori Brown, assistant professor of architecture; Pamela Heintz, director of the Mary Ann Shaw Center for Public and Community Service (CPCS); and Jan Cohen-Cruz, IA director and University Professor.
