Ruth S. Weinstock, professor of medicine and chief of the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at SUNY Upstate Medical University, will present "Diabetes: A Growing Epidemic" at 7:30 p.m. April 25 in Syracuse University's Grant Auditorium. The lecture is part of the Frontiers of Science Lecture Series.
Experts say diabetes is fast becoming one of America's foremost public health problems. Diabetes currently affects more than 20 million Americans, and is on the increase. Weinstock, who is also the medical director of the Joslin Diabetes Center at SUNY Upstate, will describe some of the latest medical approaches for the management and prevention of the disease. She will also discuss ongoing research efforts at the Joslin Diabetes Center, including the Diabetes Education and Telemedicine Project, which is examining the acceptability and cost-effectiveness of telemedicine for the delivery of diabetes care.
The Frontiers of Science Lecture Series is sponsored by SU's Departments of Science Teaching, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Mathematics and Physics in The College of Arts and Sciences; SU's L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science; SU's School of Education; the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry; and several community organizations.
