The Department of Drama and Syracuse Stage are presenting "Fiddler on the Roof," a tender, masterfully composed celebration of family, community, love and faith through Dec. 30 at the Regent Theater Complex, 820 E. Genesee St. The holiday coproduction is directed and choreographed by Anthony Salatino, associate professor of drama, and is sponsored by Excellus BlueCross BlueShield.
"Fiddler" tells the story of Tevye, the philosophical milkman, and his strong-willed daughters in a Russia that teeters on the brink of revolution. As the world around them turns to chaos, Tevye and his family warm themselves by the light of their traditions.
After making its debut in 1964, "Fiddler" soared to international, record-setting fame with more than 3,000 performances and nine Tony Awards. A classic of American musical theater, "Fiddler" is a truly touching and enduring story told through memorable music, glorious dancing and bold characters.
"Fiddler" features Stuart Zagnit (Tevye), Mary Gutzi (Golde), Mary Ellen Ashley (Yente) and Nicholas F. Saverine (Lazar Wolf). Cast members from the Department of Drama include faculty members Nathan Hurwitz (Rabbi) and Craig MacDonald (Constable), as well as junior Nadine Malouf (Tzietel and the Dream Grandmother), junior Catherine Charlebois (Hodel), sophomore Arielle Lever (Chava), junior Michael Howell (Motel), senior Stephen Anthony (Perchik), sophomore Rachel Baker (Fruma-Sarah), senior Ian Joseph (Mordcha), senior John Galas (Avram) and sophomore John Garry (Nachum).
Other drama students appearing include sophomores Justin Conte, Sarah Olbrantz, Michael Rios and Dominique Stasiulis; juniors Lauren Nolan, Frank J. Paparone, Stephen Simowski, Brendon Stimson, Kathleen Wrinn and Katja Zarolinski; and seniors Camissa Hill, Gordon Maniskas, Jason Mesches and Chrissy Malon.
