Syracuse University juniors are invited now to apply for the 2008-09 Remembrance Scholarships. An information session about the scholarships and the application process will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m. in Maxwell Auditorium.

The Remembrance Scholarships, among the most prestigious scholarships awarded by the University, were founded as a tribute to the 270 people, including 35 SU students, who were killed in the Dec. 21, 1988, bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.

Thirty-five scholarships in the amount of $5,000 are awarded each year in remembrance of the SU students lost on the flight. The scholarships are funded through an endowment supported by gifts from alumni, friends, parents and corporations. Significant support for the Remembrance Scholarships has been provided by the Fred L. Emerson Foundation; and C. Jean Thompson '66 and SU Trustee Richard L. Thompson G'67 in memory of Jean Taylor Phelan Terry '43 and John F. Phelan, Jean Thompson's parents.

Applicants for the $5,000 scholarship must be due to graduate in December 2008 or May/August 2009. Applications are available
at http://remembranceapp.syr.edu and must be submitted online by 5 p.m. on Tuesday Jan. 22, 2008. A committee of 12 SU faculty and staff and 12 former Remembrance Scholars will select the scholarship recipients based on three criteria: academic achievement, community service and responses to three essay questions.
