Syracuse University Library Associates will sponsor a talk by Harvey H. Kaiser, "A Polymath's Reflections on the Syracuse University Carnegie Library: Past, Present, and Future," on Thursday, Nov. 29, at 4 p.m. in the Peter Graham Scholarly Commons on the first floor of E.S. Bird Library. Kaiser will examine the history, current use and possible future of SU's Carnegie Library from the perspectives of the building's origins, user impressions, architectural features, role as a memorable image of the campus and potential for restoration of this centennial landmark to a central role in the University Library System and campus life.
Kaiser is president of Harvey H. Kaiser Associates Inc., Facilities Management Consultants. Kaiser served for more than 20 years as SU's senior vice president for facilities administration, as a faculty member in the School of Architecture and as an associate professor of urban and regional planning in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. He is a registered architect and holds a certificate from the National Association of Architectural Registration Board.
He is also the author of 12 books and more than 50 articles on historic preservation and facilities management. Kaiser's "The Great Camps of the Adirondacks" (Godine, 2003) is considered the seminal work on the subject. His current research interest is historic architecture in the national parks. His forthcoming book, "Sourcebook on National Park Architecture," will be published by Princeton Architectural Press in spring 2008.
