The Syracuse University Oratorio Society will join with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra (SSO), a community partner with SU's Pulse, for a performance of Poulenc's "Gloria" and will also perform an a cappella rendition of Lauridsen's "O Magnum Mysterium" as part of the SSO's Post-Standard Classics Series concert "Rodeo" Nov. 2-3 at 8 p.m. at the John H. Mulroy Civic Center at Oncenter.
Guest conductor Andre Raphel Smith will direct the concert. The SU Oratorio Society will join Smith and the SSO on stage with soprano Lianne Coble for Poulenc's "Gloria." The choir will also perform "O Magnum Mysterium" a cappella under the direction of Elisa Dekaney, faculty member in the Rose, Jules R. and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music in the College of Visual and Performing Arts.
The concert will also feature the SSO on Barber's "Symphony No. 1" and music from composer Aaron Copland's "Rodeo," a cowboy ballet that includes the selection "Hoe-Down," widely recognized from the popular "Beef: It's What's For Dinner" television commercials.
The SU Oratorio Society, founded in 1975, is a mixed vocal ensemble composed of SU students and community members who enrich the Syracuse community through education and development of choral music. The choir specializes in choral works from the Renaissance to the present; its repertoire includes international, multicultural and commissioned works. The ensemble rehearses at Crouse College, collaborates with the SSO, and performs at locations throughout the Syracuse community.
