On Nov. 11, the man USA Today calls "one of the best dancers on Earth," Tony Award-winning choreographer and tap dancer Savion Glover, will perform as part of the 2007-08 season of Syracuse University's Pulse performing arts series. A highlight of SU Family Weekend, the performance will take place at 2 p.m. in the Ann and Alfred R. Goldstein Auditorium, located in the Hildegarde and J. Myer Schine Student Center. SU's Pulse is a collaborative project of the College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) and the Division of Student Affairs.
The performance will be preceded by a silent auction of sports memorabilia from Steiner Sports, commemorative SU items, objets d'art and gifts and services from across Central New York. The auction is free and open to the public. It will take place in the Atrium of the Schine Student Center from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
"Savion Glover is truly an artist that audiences of all ages can enjoy," says Carole Brzozowski, dean of VPA. "We're delighted to welcome him to campus on a weekend when students can enjoy the performance with their families and friends."
SU Family Weekend--previously known as Parents Weekend--has been renamed this year to demonstrate SU's commitment to inclusion and support for students from all backgrounds. "SU has a long, proud tradition of welcoming parents and families with diverse, thoughtful, world-class entertainment. This year's performer takes this tradition to new levels. Savion Glover sets a tremendous example of art that cuts across
boundaries and can be enjoyed by audiences from all walks of life," says Barry L. Wells, senior vice president and dean of student affairs.
Tickets for the performance--$8 for SU students with valid SU I.D. (limit one per student); $15 for registered family members and guests; $15 for SU faculty, staff and alumni; and $20 for the general public--are required and can be purchased at the Schine Student Center Box Office, (315) 443-4517. Free parking is available in the Marion and Waverly lots on a first-come, first-served basis.
A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Parents Office Special Needs Fund, which helps "close the gap" in crisis situations (i.e., when a student must make emergency travel arrangements to visit a seriously ill parent or sibling, etc.). The Division of Student Affairs will also conduct its first-ever silent auction to benefit the fund, allowing audience members to take a piece of SU and CNY home with them. Choreographer of the Tony-winning Broadway hit "Bring in 'Da Noise, Bring in 'Da Funk," Glover made his Broadway debut at age 10. In addition to Broadway credits, he has appeared in and choreographed feature films, music videos and television commercials and specials; was a series regular on "Sesame Street"; created two dance companies, NYOTs (Not Your Ordinary Tappers) and Ti Dii; and most recently danced in a motion-capture suit that transformed his hoofing into the animation that became the moves of lead character Mumble in the animated film "Happy Feet."
