As a follow-up to the Oct. 9 visit by food activists and entrepreneurs Alice Waters and Judy Wicks, a Food Justice Roundtable will be held at Syracuse University on Wednesday, Oct. 10.
The roundtable will be held from noon-2 p.m. in Room 304 of the Hildegarde and J. Myer Schine Student Center. The event is free and open to the public; parking is available in the University's visitor pay lots.
Participants will explore issues such as what a just food landscape would look like and the steps needed to create it, and what groups and organizations are doing to work toward a just landscape.
The scheduled participants are Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows, rector of Grace Episcopal Church in Syracuse, SU's Episcopal chaplain and food/nutrition/justice activist; Danny Block, a geographer at Chicago State University, who has mapped food insecurity on the Southside of Chicago in a manner much like the Syracuse Hunger Project; Hilda Kurtz of the University of Georgia, a member of the Athens Urban Food Collective, an activist group seeking to transform where and how food is grown and consumed; Matt Potteiger, professor of landscape architecture at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and a local foodways activist; Tom Slater of the Food Bank of Central New York; and Andy Walter of West Georgia College, who has worked on rural food justice and farm worker rights issues. The roundtable will be moderated by Don Mitchell, professor of geography in SU's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.
