For more than a century, Syracuse University College of Law has educated some of the finest legal scholars and public servants in the United States, and on Friday, Oct. 12, the school will honor a professor emeritus and two of its accomplished alumni at the Law Annual Dinner during Reunion weekend.
A tribute to Professor Emeritus Martin L. Fried's 40-year teaching career at the College of Law will lead the celebratory event at the Hotel Syracuse. In addition, Lee Michaels L'67 will be recognized with the Distinguished Alumnus Service Award for his contributions as an adjunct faculty member and member of the College's Board of Visitors. Helen A. Zamboni L'77 will receive the Outstanding Alumna Service Award for her work as the executive secretary of the SU Law Alumni Association (SULAA).
Michaels is the senior member and founder of Michaels & Smolak PC and has been practicing law for 40 years. He has been listed as one of the Best Trial Lawyers in America for more than 20 years and is a five-times-certified Diplomate of the National Board of Trial Advocacy. He has been instrumental to the alumni organizations of Syracuse University College of Law, serving on the Board of Visitors as vice chairman and with the Law College Association as president. He has taught trial practice as an adjunct professor at the College of Law since 1990.
Michaels is a graduate of Cornell University and Syracuse University College of Law. He served in the U.S. Navy as a gunnery and deck officer in the destroyer force
of the Pacific Fleet, including brief operational service off Vietnam. He is a published author and frequent lecturer at Continuing Legal Education Programs of the New York State Bar Association, the Onondaga County Bar Association, the Monroe County Bar Association and the New York State Trial Lawyers Association.
Zamboni is senior counsel in the business practice group of the Rochester firm of Underberg & Kessler LLP. Zamboni concentrates her practice in general business and corporate law. She earned a bachelor's degree cum laude at Mount Holyoke College, an M.B.A. cum laude at the William E. Simon School of Business at the University of Rochester, and a J.D. cum laude at Syracuse University College of Law.
In 2005, Zamboni was selected for the YMCA of Greater Rochester's Red Triangle Award, the organization's highest volunteer recognition. She also serves on the board of trustees of Rochester's Geva Theatre Center, one of the largest regional theaters in the country. She is a member of the board of directors of the Syracuse University Law Alumni Association, where she serves as executive secretary of its executive committee.
In addition to honoring these alumni, the Law Annual Dinner will celebrate the professional career of Fried, who joined the College of Law as an associate professor in 1968. He became a full professor in 1972, served as an associate dean from 1981-83, and directed the Law in London program during the summers of 1984, 1985, 1997 and 2000. Fried was also director of graduate legal studies from 1990-93. He is the Crandall Melvin Professor of Wills & Trusts. Fried taught courses in federal income taxation, trusts and estates, and property. In May 2006, he became of counsel at Hancock & Estabrook LLP in Syracuse, where he is a member of the tax, and trusts and estates practice groups.
