"Black Holes: The One Hour Tour" is the featured topic of the next installment of the Spring 2003 Saturday Morning Physics Lecture Series at Syracuse University. The lecture will be held April 26 at 10:30 a.m. in the Physics Building, Stolkin Auditorium. The tour is free and open to the public.
Conducting the black hole tour will be Prof. Donald Marolf, an expert in the physics of black holes and string theory. The fully narrated tour will include both the photon sphere and near-horizon excursion. Side trip discussions of curved spacetime, gravitational lenses and the effects of gravity on time will also be included.
Marolf is part of an international effort to explain how gravity works at the microscopic level. The results could have profound implications for the beginning and end of the universe, as well as for the life history of black holes.
The Saturday Morning Physics lecture series is designed for all those people who have ever wondered how the world around them work-or wanted to know what physics professors do when they are not teaching. The lectures include demonstrations, which help the lay audience understand the concepts that are being discussed, and a question and answer period.
