Dollar Day at the Dome to kick off United Way campaign

The University's 2007 United Way campaign will kick off Oct. 6 with Dollar Day at the Dome during the Syracuse vs. West Virginia football game. About 150-200 members of Greek organizations will be collecting money, with Karen Broughton of the Office of Student Life coordinating. Alpha Phi Omega, a coed service fraternity, will assist in counting donations.


The chair of this year's campaign is H. Ezzat Khalifa, NYSTAR Distinguished Professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering. Vice chair is Christopher Walsh, special assistant to Vice President for Enrollment Management Donald Saleh.


Area chairs for the campaign are: Erica Blust, Joe Carfi, Sam Clemence, Marvin Druger, Pat Druger, Betsy English, Peter Koveos, Dorcas MacDonald, Deborah Monahan, Margie Johnson, Sara Luke, Neil Strodel, Peter Webber, Bob Wilson and June Winckelmann.


The United Way brochure was mailed to all faculty and staff, and a letter from Chancellor Nancy Cantor with a pledge form attached will follow. United Way of Central New York is offering Step Up Challenge '07, an opportunity for employees to win prizes by starting to give or by increasing their pledge by $52 a year. Prizes include: a $3,000 gift card to Raymour and Flanigan; a $3,000 Wegmans Gift Card; a $3,000 California Closets storage makeover; four roundtrip tickets on JetBlue Airways; Time Warner RoadRunner, Digital TV and an HDTV; and a $3,000 Delta Sonic gift card. Among the many campaign events this fall, the SU Bookstore will sponsor a cheesecake jamboree, soup and bread day and ice cream sundae social. A rummage sale will be sponsored by the College of Human Services and Health Professions. FIXit plans to hold a bottle and can drive, as does 621 Skytop Road. A new event this year for FIXit will be the Trim a Wreath Competition. A number of campus locations will host the popular campus-wide Election Day bake sale.
