The Ghana Society of Central New York (GSCNY) awarded Syracuse University its "Excellence in Diversity Award" for institutions during Ghana's 46th Independence Anniversary celebration on March 29.
The Ghana Society is a non-profit organization representing Ghanaian and other African nations, cites SU's strong leadership and diversified presence in the community as attributes that make it stand out among other institutions in the Central New York region.
"Your fine institution, especially the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the African American Studies Department, have collaborated with us on numerous educational projects," writes J. Kwame Otieku, secretary for the Society, in the formal notification of the award. "Syracuse University will continue to maintain that long-standing dedication for GSCNY to promote its mission in the community."
James Duah-Agyeman, director of student support/diversity education, was the master of ceremonies for the event. Cynthia N. Fulford, associate director of multicultural affairs was in attendance at the celebration to accept the award on behalf of SU.
"We are honored and proud to receive an award that recognizes our commitment to diversity and educating the community about various aspects of it," says Barry L. Wells, senior vice president and dean of student affairs. "SU has historically been a supporter of diversity in its philosophy, programs, and practices. We are glad to demonstrate this vision to the community, as well as on our campus."
