Syracuse University Abroad has announced the addition of two new World Partner programs, one in Berlin, Germany, and the other in Istanbul, Turkey. World Partner programs differ from SU center-based programs (including those in London, Madrid, Florence, Beijing, Hong Kong, Strasbourg and Santiago) in that they allow students to enroll directly in universities around the globe. The Berlin and Istanbul programs are being added to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse and adventurous student body.
Berlin
Beginning with the Spring 2008 semester, students interested in German language, culture and history can spend either a semester or a full year at Freie Universitat in Berlin. The program offers German language classes either as an exploratory course (about 4 credit hours) for beginners or intensive course (about 8 credit hours) for students of all levels, as well as classes taught in English. These additional classes range from modern European studies to architecture, fine arts, film, history, political science, and German literature and culture.
The seat of the German government, Berlin is home to numerous historical sites, including the former Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie and the Holocaust Memorial. Film studios in nearby Babelsberg were used to create such movies as "Mission Impossible 2" and "V for Vendetta." The city's more than 160 museums and many theaters, orchestras and choirs will appeal to art and music lovers. The program is offered in both fall and spring semesters.
Istanbul
Also beginning in Spring 2008 is the University's program in Turkey. Istanbul is
Turkey's most populous city, as well as its cultural and financial center. Because of its strategic location at the juncture of two continents, Turkey's culture offers a unique blend of Eastern and Western traditions. SU's partnership with Bogazici University offers an array of exciting options for SU students, from enhancing a European studies or Middle Eastern studies minor or gaining proficiency in the Turkish language, to pursuing course work in a transcontinental world center. The language of instruction is English, with Turkish language instruction available at several levels. The program is available in the spring semester only.
