The Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse will host "Under One Roof Reprise," an exhibition presented by the Everson Museum and National Grid in conjunction with the Syracuse University College of Visual and Performing Arts, Sept. 29-Jan. 13, 2008.
It features the efforts of nine women artists who learn, teach and work in SU's Comstock Art Facility (ComArt, whose work has come together in surprising and interesting ways. The artists are Anne Beffel, Ann Clarke, Mary Giehl, Abby Goodman, Claire Harootunian, Gail Hoffman, Laura Ledbetter, Jude Lewis and Kim Carr Valdez.
The artists' processes are diverse, including large-scale installations, found-object collaboration, casting, kinetics, video and hand-tooled objects. Emphasis is placed on the creative use of materials such as fibers, metals, wood, plastics, resin and everyday products. These artists address common themes such as play, gender, identity, time, place and, most of all, memories.
An opening night lecture and reception will be held Sept. 28 from 5:30-8 p.m. The lecture will feature Judith Meighan, SU assistant professor of history of art, who will offer an overview of the exhibition, presenting common threads that tie together the diverse subject matter and materials used by the nine artists. In addition, Meighan will place the artists' work within the broader context of contemporary art and artistic practice. The lecture will be held in Hosmer Auditorium. Light hors d'oeuvres, a cash bar and the musical stylings of Jerry Exline will be offered from 6-8 p.m. The lecture and reception are free for Everson members and $10 for non-members.
