Syracuse University Library's Special Collections Research Center has mounted an exhibition, "Raising Rebels: Radical Children's Literature from 1900 through 1980," on the sixth floor of E.S. Bird Library. Free and open to the public, the exhibition is available weekdays (except holidays) from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. through Aug. 17. Pay parking is available in the Marion visitor lot on Waverly Ave.
The exhibition includes biographies (John Brown, Nikolai Lenin, John Reed); children's periodicals (The Little Socialist Magazine, New Pioneer) treating subjects such as the Spanish Civil War and the Paris Commune; the Young World Books series issued by International Publishers, an organ of the Communist Party of the United States of America; and books with feminist, labor, pacifist and racial themes.
Authors and illustrators include Arna Bontemps, Gwendolyn Brooks, Jack Conroy, Langston Hughes, Howard Fast, Oliver Harrington, Jacob Lawrence, Lois Lenski, Meridel Le Sueur, Leo Lionni, Dorothy Sterling and Lynd Ward.
