Joseph D. Lore has been named interim director of Syracuse University's Department of Recreation Services. Lore, formerly Recreation Services' associate director of facilities, succeeds former director Mitchell E. Gartenberg, who has joined the University of Georgia as the director of recreational sports. Lore will oversee the department while a national search for a director is conducted.

Lore has been a member of the SU community since 1984 and has held a wide range of positions and responsibilities within the Department of Recreation Services, including associate director of facilities, director of club sports and director of fitness centers, among others. As associate director of facilities, he is responsible for the day-to-day management and all policies and guidelines for the University's indoor and outdoor recreation facilities, including Archbold and Flanagan gymnasiums, the Women's Building and the Bill and Marilyn Tennity Ice Skating Pavilion. Since 1984, Lore has also been responsible for the leadership, organization, administration and evaluation of a 53-sport club program with more than 1,500 student participants annually. He also oversees the operation of five campus fitness centers that serve more than 165,000 participants annually.

In 2001, Lore served as director of the National Association of Intercollegiate Gymnastics Clubs National Championships. That year, he also established the Northeast Collegiate Women's Club Soccer League. In addition to his responsibilities within the department, Lore has served on numerous University-wide committees and authored several articles that were published in Fitness Management Magazine.

Lore holds a bachelor's degree in business management from the SUNY College at Plattsburgh and a master's degree in recreation from Slippery Rock University.
