On Monday, April 9, an induction ceremony for 83 new members of Phi Beta Delta was held in Hendricks Chapel. Phi Beta Delta is the first honor society dedicated to recognizing scholarly achievement in international education. In addition to scholarly achievement, the society recognizes U.S. students who have studied abroad and faculty and staff who are involved in international activities. Current executive board members of the Syracuse University Alpha Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Delta nominated members of the SU community whose commitment to internationalization deserved recognition and, in the case of students, whose academic performance met eligibility standards. The inductees included 20 undergraduate and 44 graduate students, of which 51 were international students and 13 were U.S. nationals. Nineteen faculty and staff members from SU were also inducted.
Geraldine de Berly, president of the Alpha Sigma Chapter and associate dean of University College, presided over the ceremony, assisted by Patricia Burak, director of the Slutzker Center for International Services and chapter coordinator of the Syracuse University Alpha Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Delta. Also assisting in the inductin ceremony were Jon Booth, executive director; Elane Granger, associate director; and Susan Loevenguth, assistant director of SU Abroad; Angelina Romano-Stroup, functional business analyst, Rika McKenna, assistant director; Lynn Dunyk, administrative specialist of the Slutzker Center for International Services; and Betty L. Briggs, senior administrator at University College/English Language Institute.
The keynote address was delivered Eric F. Spina, vice chancellor and provost, who was inducted into Phi Beta Delta as an honorary member. A reception was held in the Noble Room of Hendricks Chapel immediately following the induction ceremony.
