Feminist scholar/activist Patricia McFadden will speak on "European Neo-imperial Militarization in Africa: Emerging Challenges to African Feminism" April 17 in the Peter Graham Scholarly Commons of Syracuse University's E.S. Bird Library. The lecture will run from 5-6:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Parking is available in the Booth Garage, located on the corner of Marshall Street and Comstock Avenue, with a discount rate available upon request from the parking attendant.
McFadden was born in Swaziland and has worked in the African and global women's movements for the past 30 years. She has taught in Africa, the United States and Europe. She is currently the Cosby Chair of Social Sciences in the Women's Research and Resource Center at Spelman College in Atlanta; she also works as a "feminist consultant," supporting women in creating institutionally sustainable feminist spaces within Southern Africa. Her most recent initiative is the establishment of a Women's Leadership Center in Windhoek, Namibia.
Formerly an international dean in the International Women's University, the editor of the Southern African Feminist Review and a program officer in the Southern African Regional Institute for Policy Studies, McFadden strives to provide conceptual, intellectual and programmatic support to African feminists in envisioning and sustaining programs that draw on the radical political energies of African women.
