The Syracuse University Brazilian Ensemble will perform a concert at 8 p.m. April 22 in the Rose and Jules R. Setnor Auditorium in the University's Crouse College. The concert is free and open to the public.
The ensemble will perform "Bossa Nova" and "Batucada" as well as folksongs and Brazilian popular music. The group will be joined in the concert by members of the University's Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Michael Bull, adjunct instructor in the Rose, Jules R. and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music, and members of the Syracuse University Orchestra. The program will also feature artwork by Jessica Zucker and Jonathan Hurtarte, both are freshmen in the College of Visual and Performing Arts.
The ensemble was founded during the Fall 2001 semester by Elisa Macedo Dekaney, assistant professor of music education in the Setnor School of Music; and Joshua Dekaney, adjunct instructor in the Setnor School of Music.
In addition to the Dekaney's, the ensemble includes several student members who play a variety of traditional Latin American percussion instruments. The ensemble's unique and lively sounds are drawn from the Brazilian Escola de Samba (samba school) tradition, which features large groups of musicians, dancers and singers; and draws heavily from African and Western European music traditions.
