Africa Initiative symposium March 29 reflects on Ghana's independence

The Syracuse University Africa Initiative in the Department of African American Studies in The College of Arts and Sciences will host the Spring 2007 Pan African Studies Symposium Series, "Ghana's Independence and the Global Pan African Movement," a commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Ghanaian independence, on Thursday, March 29, from 10:30 a.m.-7 p.m. at the Community Folk Art Center, 805 E. Genesee St.


SU Associate Provost Kal Alston will open the daylong symposium, which brings together scholars from across the country to reflect on the importance of Ghana's independence. This symposium, co-sponsored by the African Students Union, will feature the following participants:

  • N'Dri T. Assie-Lumumba of Cornell University
  • Joseph Engwenyu of Eastern Michigan University
  • Anthony Ephirim-Donkor of Binghamton University
  • Charles Mate-Kole of Central Connecticut State University
  • John Marah of the SUNY College at Brockport
  • Micere Mugo, SU Laura J. and L. Douglas Meredith Professor for Teaching Excellence and chair of the Department of African American Studies
  • Emmanuael B. Awuah of Onondaga Community College
  • Olatunji Ojo, assistant professor of history in SU's Maxwell School


  • Tiffany Patterson of Hamilton College
  • Horace Campbell, chair of the Africa Initiative and professor of African American studies at SU
  • Michael West of Binghamton University
  • Sandra Green of Cornell University
  • Ifi Amadiume of Dartmouth College
  • S.N. Sangmpam, associate professor of political science in SU's Maxwell School
  • Winston Grady Willis, associate professor of African American studies at SU
