The Department of Earth Sciences' K. Douglas Nelson Colloquium Series in Syracuse University's College of Arts and Sciences will present its annual Chauncey D. Holmes Lecture and Award Ceremony on Thursday, March 29, at 7 p.m. in Heroy Auditorium, located in the Heroy Geology Laboratory. The event is free and open to the public; parking is available in the University's visitor pay lots.
Mark Harrison, professor of geology and director of the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at the University of California, Los Angeles, will present "From Hell to the Himalayas."
Following the lecture, the Department of Earth Sciences will honor eight undergraduate students with the Chauncey D. Holmes Award, presented in recognition of their outstanding performance in introductory-level geology courses. Holmes, a 1927 SU graduate and esteemed geologist, established the award to recognize outstanding students in introductory geology, which was a cornerstone of his career in academics.
