Established in 1959, the SU campus in Florence has long been an integral part of the Florentine community. In honor of what an Ataf public transportation official calls, "A Florentine institution that has shaped and influenced its surroundings in a positive manner," the bus stop at Piazza Savonarola (home to SUF) has been renamed Syracuse University.
The idea of the Ataf (bus line) committee has been to make the stops more meaningful to Florentines by personalizing the bus stops and updating them so that the names more accurately reflect the unique character of each neighborhood. In most cases, Ataf has chosen new names based on museums, hospitals, cultural institutions and large business firms. Says center director Barbara Deimling, "We are thrilled for SU to be recognized in such a visible way by Ataf and the city of Florence. This most certainly reflects the integration of our institution within the urban and cultural network of the city."
SUF is the only American University in Florence that has been honored with a named stop.
