Five seniors and two recent alumnae from the College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) and six seniors from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University are recipients of local 2007 Student ADDY? Awards. Presented by the Syracuse Ad Club as part of its annual Syracuse Advertising Awards and ADDY? Awards Competition, winners were recognized at an awards show March 2 at Ohm Lounge in downtown Syracuse.

Work submitted to the local competition may advance to regional and/or national competitions. All gold winners automatically advance to the regional competition in March, while silver winners may advance for a small fee per entry.

"The advertising industry has long recognized the importance of outstanding creative work with the professional ADDYs and now with the level of competition between advertising schools and programs at an all-time high, the same is true of student work," says Pete Barry, assistant professor of advertising design in VPA. "Success at the Student ADDYs helps to set one school or student apart from another. This has been another great year for VPA's advertising design program. The entire faculty congratulates the winners and wishes them the best of luck at regional and national competitions."

"The ADDY awards are a unique way to introduce our students to the inner workings of the advertising industry. Winning means they are given the same recognition as professionals," says Sue Westcott Alessandri, assistant professor of advertising and public relations in the Newhouse School. "Seeing Syracuse students recognized for their creativity is recognition of what we professors already know: Students come up with great, creative ideas and deserve to have them showcased. The winners should be very proud of themselves. Winning these awards is a pretty good indicator of success in the ad industry."

A distinguished panel of advertising creative executives judged the 62 student entries and recognized the best work based on creativity, originality and creative strategy. Judging was conducted at the Newhouse School in January.
