On Thursday, March 8, architect Grahame Shane will give a lecture, "Fractal City," at SU London's Faraday House. Professionals from London's architecture community will join SU London students, faculty and staff for this lecture and reception. The event will be part of SUL's "Utopian London" series, which features weekly lectures by professionals in the architecture field.
Shane is an adjunct professor of architecture at Columbia University. He has lectured extensively in Europe and the United States on architecture and urbanism, and has published widely in architectural journals, including Casabella, Architectural Design, Design Book Review, Harvard Design Magazine, the Journal of Architectural Education and Architectural Record. He is author of the book "Recombinant Urbanism: Conceptual Modeling in Architecture, Urban Design and City Theory" (Wiley Press, 2005).
Spring 2007 is the inaugural semester for SU London's specialized architecture curriculum. In 1980, the
Syracuse University School of Architecture -- the fourth oldest school of architecture in the United States --
launched the Florence Architecture Program, and now SU architecture students have an additional opportunity for
a professional degree semester in London. Students enroll in six credits of design coursework and participate in
extensive field study to important architectural sites in London and Great Britain. London professionals selected by the School of Architecture teach the program, and distinguished visiting European critics, who join the faculty each semester for reviews and lectures, supplement instruction.
Established in 1970, SU's London program fosters scholarship in action through its focus on global citizenship
and multiculturalism. Course offerings are comprehensive and include fine arts, a
rchitecture, international business, music industry, drama, public communications and liberal arts.
