Syracuse Opera, a community partner with Syracuse University's Pulse, is offering buy-one, get-one-free tickets to the SU community for Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor" this Friday, March 2, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, March 4, at 2:30 p.m. at the John H. Mulroy Civic Center's Crouse-Hinds Concert Theater.
Buy-one, get-one-free tickets are good for $44 or $62 priced seats only. The offer is subject to availability and must be redeemed by Wednesday, Feb. 28. Donizetti's classic opera "Lucia di Lammermoor" will be performed in Italian with projected English translations. The opera takes place at an ancient castle in the Scottish highlands, where the fair but ill-fated Lucia spirals through an emotional gauntlet. Fueled by forbidden love and familial hatred, she is destined for murder, madness and death.
"Lucia" premiered at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples on Sept. 26, 1835. Salvatore Cammarano's libretto is based on Sir Walter Scott's novel "The Bride of Lammermoor," published in 1819. "Lucia" is Donizetti's most popular and enduring work. One of the work's greatest scenes is the infamous "Mad Scene" when Lucia is forced to marry against her will and murders her husband on their wedding night.
"Lucia" stars Canadian soprano Nikki Einfeld; Syracuse native, tenor Dinyar Vania; baritone William Andrew Stuckey; and bass Eric Johnson, assistant professor in SU's College of Visual and Performing Arts. Maestro Steven White returns to the podium to direct.
