Phu Duong, assistant professor in SU's School of Architecture, will present two workshops designed to help faculty members turn simple PowerPoint slides into multimedia presentations. The workshops are sponsored by SU's Faculty Computing and Media Services (FCMS), a division of Information Technology and Services (ITS), as part of its Faculty Technology Associate initiative.
Duong, who is the Spring 2007 Faculty Technology Associate for FCMS, will present "Making Interactive Diagrams Using Flash 8" Thursday, Feb. 15, and Friday, Feb. 16, from 9:30-11 a.m. In addition, Duong will present "Movie clips + Text + Sound + Simple Playback Interface in Flash 8" Thursday, March 1, and Friday, March 2, from 9:30-11 a.m. All of the workshops will be held in Room 272 of Newhouse II. The February workshops will teach participants to use interactive diagramming techniques to enhance PowerPoint presentations. Participants will learn to use Flash version 8 to create Flash Player diagrams that are viewable on any Web browser. The March workshops will teach participants to turn the movie capabilities of a digital camera into animated material for use in PowerPoint presentations or on the Web.
Duong, who earned a master's degree in architecture and urban design at Columbia University, received a 2005 Vision Fund Grant from SU for "Resurfacing Upstate," an interactive CD-ROM that documented the regional development of five Upstate New York cities. He incorporates the use of digital software into his architectural design pedagogy and teaches a course in digital representation using Bentley MicroStation for 3d modeling, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Dreamweaver and Flash. In studio courses, he exposes students to Adobe Premiere for editing animations they create to better understand the effects of movement of their speculative design work in space and time.
In addition to teaching at SU, Duong serves as a faculty member in the Urban Design Program at the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture Planning and Preservation. His professional interests are in urbanism and media. Much of his professional work lies in the design of corporate and mixed-use, large-scale building projects. He has worked in Oslo, London and New York City as an associate of NBBJ Architecture. Before coming to SU, Duong was an associate of Handel Architects in New York City.
