The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University has announced the establishment of the Turner Diversity Fellowship Program. Backed by a two-year, $140,000 gift from Turner Broadcasting System Inc., the program will fund Newhouse students from underrepresented groups who are pursuing graduate study in the areas of advertising; media management; broadcast journalism; television radio, and film; or new media.
"We are tremendously excited about this opportunity to help educate the next wave of communications professionals," says Joel Kaplan, Newhouse associate dean for professional graduate studies. "This fellowship will provide an amazing opportunity for minority students interested in studying advertising; media management; broadcast journalism; television, radio and film; or new media. Not only will they receive a fully-funded master's degree from Newhouse, they also will be guaranteed a job with Turner Broadcasting upon graduation. This fellowship opportunity, combined with our existing Newhouse Minority Fellowship Program for those interested in pursuing a career in newspaper journalism, shows the school's and the industry's commitment to having a diverse workforce."
The deadline for applications to all Newhouse graduate programs was Feb. 1, but has been extended to March 1 for those interested in Turner Fellowships. The first Turner Diversity Fellows will enter the school in summer 2007.
