How has email impacted the expression of emotions in the workplace? Has email made miscommunication more common? Do colleagues have a tendency to negatively misinterpret emails?
These questions and more will be explored and answered by Kristin Byron, assistant professor of management in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University. Byron will speak about "Carrying Too Heavy a Load" at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 14 in Room 525 of the Whitman School Building. The lecture is free and open to SU faculty, staff and students.
Byron will examine how the recipients of email often misinterpret emotions conveyed and will describe what factors make miscommunications more likely. She will also address how emotional miscommunication affects organizations and how employees can improve the accuracy of emotional communication in emails.
Byron holds a Ph.D. from Georgia State University. "Carrying Too Heavy a Load" will appear in a forthcoming issue of the Academy of Management Review. Her research also has been published in the Journal of Applied Social Psychology, the Journal of Vocational Behavior and the Journal of Management.
