Ryan Dygert of Syracuse, N.Y., a Ph.D. candidate in mechanical and aerospace engineering in Syracuse University's L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science, won first place in the master's division research competition during the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics' International Student Conference, held Jan. 7-8 in Reno, Nev.
Dygert's paper and accompanying presentation on "Experimental Investigation of Embedded Cross-Flow Fan for Airfoil Propulsion/Circulation Control" competed against seven other papers and presentations from students from the United States and Germany. Dygert's paper had previously won first place at the AIAA's Northeast Regional Student Conference held in Syracuse last March.
The paper and presentation were based on Dygert's master's thesis research on the testing and development of an innovative propulsion and flow control system for use in aircraft. Dygert's advisor is Thong Dang, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering.
