Max Garcia and Micah Rubin, both 2004 graduates of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, are the organizers of "Survivor Art," a benefit exhibition of original drawings by survivors of the December 2004 tsunami that hit South and Southeast Asia. The exhibition will be held Feb. 10 from 6:30-9 p.m. at Bamboo 52, 355 W. 52nd St. in New York City.
Two weeks after the tsunami, Garcia and Rubin went to Nagapatanam, India, to help build temporary shelters. While there, they visited local residents living in refugee camps, and provided them with markers and paper. The resulting works of art, along with Rubin's photographs of the survivors and their personal stories, comprise the exhibition.
The works of art will be available for purchase. All proceeds will benefit the American India Foundation, an international development organization charged with the mission of accelerating social and economic change in India.
Garcia and Rubin both received master's degrees in journalism from the Newhouse School. Garcia is a freelancer, and Micah is on the staff of InStyle magazine.
