Nigerian-born writer Chris Abani gives the keynote speech during this year's Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration in the Carrier Dome on the theme of "The Beloved Community: Imagining Our Global Humanity."
Abani was at one time imprisoned by the Nigerian regime for his writings. From turmoil came art; his breakthrough novel, "GraceLand," is a moving portrait of a teenage Elvis impersonator, set against the backdrop of one of the world's largest cities, Lagos.
Also part of the festivities were choral music by a mass choir and by SU's Black Celestial Choral Ensemble; and the presentation of the 2007 Unsung Heroes Awards.
