John I. Brauman, the J.G. Jackson-C.J. Wood Professor of Chemistry at Stanford University, will visit the Syracuse University campus April 15 and 16 as this year's Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar.
Brauman will present a public lecture entitled "Impacts of Technology on Basic Science" April 15 at 4:30 p.m. in Room 104 of Winifred MacNaughton Hall. On April 16, he will present a more technical talk, "Reactivity and Solvation in Ionic Reactions" at 4 p.m. in Room 1-019 of the Center for Science and Technology. Both lectures are open to the public.
Brauman, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, is a recipient of the academy's Award in Chemical Sciences and the American Chemical Society's Award in Pure Chemistry, among numerous other awards.
Phi Beta Kappa, founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary, is the oldest and most prestigious honor society in the United States. Kappa Chapter of New York, the local Phi Beta Kappa chapter at Syracuse University, annually elects the top students in the University's College of Arts and Sciences to membership. The chapter presents a fall lecture and brings a visiting scholar to campus during the spring semester.
