Syracuse University's eclectic Brazilian Ensemble will join forces with the Rose, Jules R. and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music faculty Jazz Ensemble for a musical repertoire that will include traditional Batucada, Brazilian pop, samba-reggae and a selection of Bossa Nova songs on April 8 at 8 p.m. in the University's Rose and Jules R. Setnor Auditorium in Crouse College. The concert, presented by the Setnor Tuesday Concert Series, is free and open to the public.
Directed by Joshua Dekaney, who is also the lead drummer, the Brazilian Ensemble is composed of SU students who learn to play traditional instruments and perform the unique and lively music drawn from the Brazilian Escola de Samba (samba school) tradition, which originated during the 1920s. Dekaney holds a master's degree in music performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music. He has taught steel drums and Brazilian music at Florida State University, and performs exclusively on cymbals, sounds and percussion.
