Jeffrey Hoone, executive director of Light Work and Syracuse University's Coalition of Museum and Art Centers (CMAC), and the entire Light Work organization were honored for their service to artists at the Alliance of New York State Arts Organizations fall gala, held in New York City Nov. 15.
Light Work is a nonprofit, artist-run organization whose mission is to support emerging and under-recognized artists working in photography and digital media. This recognition, particularly in the "Service to Artists" category, is an honor because of the organization's dedicated staff that works with and supports artists in numerous ways, including exhibitions, grants, publications, a renowned artist-in-residence program, and hands-on assistance through public-access darkroom and digital facilities.
Hoone was hired at Light Work in 1980 and named director in 1982. When Hoone took over Light Work, he was the only full-time employee. Since 1982, the organization has grown to seven employees, all of whom serve a variety of roles with the common goal of supporting artists. Over the years, Hoone has facilitated countless programs, publications and exhibitions with the focus of serving artists from all over the world. Recently, he was named executive director of SU's CMAC, which brings together the programs, services and projects of art centers and museums on campus and in the local community in a collaborative effort to expand public awareness, understanding, appreciation and involvement in the visual and electronic arts.
The goal of the Alliance of New York State Arts Organizations is to provide essential leadership and services to arts and cultural organizations across New York state. Founded 30 years ago, the alliance assists arts organizations in gaining community support and informs organizations about prominent issues (both in New York and nationally) that affect the arts.
