Syracuse University and the Syracuse Common Council are continuing their initiative to display art and photography in the Common Council chambers at City Hall, 233 E. Washington St. "Off Shoots: Post-Standard Staff Photographers," the project's third display, goes on view Monday, Nov. 20.
Karen Ventrone in SU's Office of Government and Community Relations, Syracuse City Clerk John Copanas and Mary Lee Hodgens, program coordinator for Light Work, are coordinating the project. The organizers hope to rotate works in the chambers every four months.
"Off Shoots" includes images made during off hours by photography staff of The Post-Standard. Created without the promise of payment or publication or the pressure of deadlines, this personal work represents a unique approach and aesthetic. With more than 15 years' average experience shooting newspaper photographs, The Post-Standard photographers tell stories with a single image. The images in "Off Shoots" capture their personal lives, creative interests and passions.
Participating photographers include John Berry, Ellen Blalock, Dick Blume, Al Campanie, Steve Cannerelli, Peter Chen, Jim Commentucci, Michelle Gabel, Mike Greenlar, Li-Hua Lan, Dave Lassman, Nick Lisi, C.W. McKeen, Dennis Nett, Carrie Niland, Hal Slate, Stan Walker, Gary Walts and Gloria Wright.
Common Council chambers are open to the public during all public meetings of the Common Council, Planning Commission and Preservation Board, and whenever City Hall group tours are given. There is no admission charge for viewing the work.
