Nationally renowned sustainability education expert Debra Rowe will be the featured speaker at a Syracuse University symposium titled "Creating the Triple Bottom Line: Healthier Planet, People, Economies" Friday, Nov. 3, from 10-11:30 a.m. in Room 304 of the Hildegarde and J. Myer Schine Student Center.
The symposium will define sustainability, review its significance to SU as a higher education community, and challenge people to act as social change agents by sharing some easy but important ways to alter their day-to-day lives. The event is also intended to help educators create and cultivate socially just, economically fair-minded and environmentally conscious community leaders for the next generation.
Rowe is the higher education co-chair and president of the U.S. Partnership for Education for Sustainable Development. She is also senior fellow at the Association of University Leaders for a Sustainable Future, national co-coordinator of the Higher Education Association's Sustainability Consortium and senior advisory councilor for the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. Rowe helps higher education associations, colleges and universities integrate education for a sustainable future into mission, curricula, student life, operations and community partnerships. She has authored and edited numerous publications on the integration of sustainability into education.
"Dr. Rowe brings a tremendous amount of experience, expertise and passion to the topic of sustainability," says Jeanne Steffes, associate vice president for student affairs. "She is one of the rare educators who has begun to integrate the many discrete and complex parts of academe to help us collectively look at the problem and work together to begin to solve it."
