The life of Professor Vine Deloria (1933-2005), named one of TIME magazine's 10 most influential theologians of the 20th century, will be celebrated on Thursday, Nov. 2, at 5 p.m. in Stolkin Auditorium in the Physics Building on the Syracuse University campus.
Onondaga Faithkeeper and distinguished professor at the University at Buffalo Oren Lyons will share his thoughts about Deloria, a leading scholar and activist of the Sioux people, followed by Scott Lyons, assistant professor of writing and rhetoric and Native American studies, reading an essay he wrote about collaborating with this icon.
A reception will follow in the Heroy Geology Laboratory lobby. This tribute marks the beginning of Native American Heritage Month, which will be commemorated with a series of speakers and events throughout November.
Deloria's remembrance is sponsored by Syracuse University College of Law's Center for Indigenous, Law, Governance, & Citizenship; the Native Student Program of the Office of Multicultural Affairs; and The College of Arts and Sciences' Native American Studies program.
