The School of Information Studies has announced the establishment of the Ellen G. Shay Library Science Scholarship. The $1,000 annual scholarship will be awarded to a graduate student pursuing an advanced degree in library and information science, especially one interested in pursuing a career as a school librarian. The scholarship was created in memory of the late Ellen Griffiths Shay, a 1957 alumna of the school's master's degree program in library science, through an estate gift of her late husband, Dr. Ralph S. Shay.
Shay served as a librarian for 31 years at Lebanon (Pa.) Junior High School and also worked as a librarian at Temple University, Lebanon Valley College, Palmyra (Pa.) Area schools, and South Lebanon (Pa.) schools. She was a consultant in library science for the Pennsylvania Department of Education and helped develop state standards for school librarians. She was active in several library associations, including serving as secretary for the Pennsylvania School Librarians Association. She was a life member of SU's chapter of Beta Phi Mu.
